The importance of fall foliage and elevations. When you read a fall foliage report, the experts and meteorologists always mention mountain elevations. Why is mountain elevation so important? And where are the highest, mid, and lowest elevations in the NC mountains? This post will explain the reason elevation is so important. And list the different popular mountains in each elevation range.

NC Fall Foliage

Fall foliage colors always begin in the highest elevations, those over 5,000 feet. How and why the leaves change color is pretty complicated. But when the change does start taking place, elevation is significant. Higher elevations have cooler air temperatures. The cooler temperatures result in trees preparing to enter their winter dormant period. To add to that, the highest trees change color first, and the highest leaves in a tree change first. At the start of autumn, the air temperatures cool, and a tree’s growth cycle slows down. Since the leaves at the very top of the tree are furthest from the roots, nutrients stop reaching them first. Fewer nutrients mean less chlorophyll. Without chlorophyll, the leaves lose the green. No chlorophyll results in the color change. The type of tree depends on the color of the leaves. Different tree species have different colors their leaves change into during the fall foliage season.

Where To Go

Looking at the locations of the mountains you can understand why the Blue Ridge Parkway is so popular during the fall foliage season. The parkway runs right through some of the highest mountain ranges in North Carolina. Other areas to visit would be Boone, Blowing Rock, and Banner Elk. More south the areas of Cashiers, Highlands, and Franklin have some great views of the Nantahala National Forest. Bryson City and Cherokee are close to the Great Smoky Mountains. Views of the Great Smokies during the fall foliage season are very nice. And Asheville is a popular destination during October.

Typical Timing To View Peak Fall Foliage in NC Mountains

Late September – Spotty color begins at elevations over 6,000 feet in the highest mountains.
First week of October – Color appears at or above 5,000 feet elevation, including Mount Mitchell and Grandfather Mountain.
Second week of October – color appears at the 4,000-5,000 feet elevations.
Third week of October – color spreads to the 3,000-4,000 feet elevations.
Fourth week of October – color makes it to the 2,000-3,000 feet elevations.
Early November- color spreads into the 1,000-2,000 feet elevations.

“The Shadow of the Bear” NC Mountains Annual Fall Visitor

The Shadow of the Bear NC mountains’ annual fall visitor will make an appearance soon. Every fall foliage season Whiteside Mountain in Jackson County gets an unusual visitor. At sunset, this visitor slowly creeps across the valley of the mountain growing larger with every minute. The unusual visitor is a bear, or “The Shadow of the Bear”. When conditions are just right in late October as the sun sets behind Whiteside Mountain the “shadow of the bear” is visible for about 30 minutes between 5:30-6:15 PM. It must be sunny and it only lasts for about 30 minutes. Conditions must be just right. Rain clouds, fog, haze, or cloudy conditions can prevent the shadow from being visible.

When And Where

It takes place only for about 3 weeks, from mid-October (10/15) through early November (11/10). Its trek across the mountain valley is a treat to see during the fall foliage months. But “the shadow of the bear” also repeats its journey in winter from mid-February through early March.

To see the Shadow of the Bear you must be very lucky or very dedicated. Weather conditions must be just right. And it may take multiple trips to the overlook on different days before the conditions are right and the shadow can be seen shadow crossing the valley. And taking a photo is even more difficult!

Whiteside Mountain

Whiteside Mountain has an elevation of 4,930 feet. Its sheer rock cliffs are among the highest in the eastern United States. Whitetop Mountain is located in Jackson County, NC. The shadow of the mountain at sunset cast upon the lower valley looks very much like a bear walking across the treetops. To view this unusual site go to Rhodes Big View Overlook on US Highway 64. The overlook is a few miles west of Cashiers and five miles east of Highlands. But the overlook is not marked!
Directions

From Cashiers – Beginning at the traffic light at the intersection of Highway 64 and NC 107 in Cashiers, travel west on Highway 64 (toward Highlands) for about 4.3 miles. The Rhodes Big View Overlook, which is not marked, is on the left. If you reach the sign for the entrance to the Whiteside Mountain Trail, you have gone too far and missed the overlook.

From Highlands – Head east on Highway 64 and travel a little over 5 miles. The overlook is just past the sign to Whiteside Mountain Trail and just over the Jackson County line. The overlook will be on the right. Park in the pull-off area across the road from the overlook. Be careful, the area can be crowded, and beware of oncoming traffic.

From Asheville – Take I-26 to exit 40/Highway 280/Airport exit to Brevard. Then follow U.S. 64 to Cashiers. About 70 miles and about 2.5 hours driving time.

Shadow of the Bear Location and Map of Highlands and Cahiers Area

The Cullasaja Gorge

While in the area of Highlands, NC a ride on the Cullasaja Gorge is a must. It is located along US 64 between Franklin and Highlands, NC. The gorge is a 7.5-mile ride along the Cullasaja River. This road is narrow, steep, and full of twists and turns. Drive slow and be very cautious of oncoming traffic.

The views of the mountains, the forest, and the river are just spectacular. There are several waterfalls located along the way. The waterfall Bridal Veil Falls, just 1.2 miles west of Highlands. Dry Falls has a 75-foot waterfall with a nice view of the river. From Dry Falls parking area, a short trail leads you behind the waterfall ( so you stay dry). Also, a walkway provides a great view of the waterfall from the parking area. Other falls along the Cullasaja Gorge are Quarry Falls and Cullasaja Falls. In autumn a ride on the Cullasaja George is so beautiful when the leaves are golden yellow, orange, and red.

The Omni Grove Park Inn National Gingerbread House Competition display for this holiday season takes place from November 18, 2015 through January 3, 2016 in Asheville, North Carolina at the Omni Grove Park Inn. Judging for the annual competition takes place on November 16, 2015 and the awards ceremony is open and free to the public. This year is the 23rd Annual National Gingerbread House Competition at the inn.
The bakers must make their elaborate gingerbread houses all edible except for the base. Every part of the gingerbread house must be able to be eaten. It takes an experienced baker to enter this competition with a great imagination. Not to mention a love for sweets!

It is so much fun to stroll through the display of magical gingerbread houses baked and decorated by cooks from all over the United States. While in Asheville make a special trip to the Omni Grove Park Inn to see this favorite holiday event. Enjoy the intricate candy decorated gingerbread creations. It will be hard not to get into the spirit of Christmas while walking though the display. You may even become inspired to make your own holiday gingerbread house!

The Gingerbread Houses are on display in the main lobby floor in both wings of the resort. A map can be obtained from the information desk of the Omni Grove Park Inn. While at the Omni Grove Park Inn you can also do some shopping at the gift shop, warm up and enjoy the fire in the fireplace in the lobby, and see the display of more than 80 decorated Christmas trees. The Omni Grove Park Inn is a magical place during the holiday season with Christmas trees, garland, lights, wreaths and decorations to impress us all. There is no charge to enter the resort and view the gingerbread houses but there is a $10 parking fee per car.

And while in Asheville you can also visit Biltmore Estate. Christmas at Biltmore this year is November 6, 2015 – January 10, 2016. Biltmore Estate is beautiful any time of year but during the Christmas holiday season the huge estate is magical. Biltmore during the festive Christmas season is decorated with strands of garland, red and gold bows, dozens of trees, thousands of ornaments, and millions of lights.

National Parks Birthday Tuesday

The National Parks birthday is Tuesday. The national park service is celebrating their 99th birthday Tuesday August 25, 2015. That day is called Founders Day. Many national parks do charge an admittance fee that will be waived on Founders Day. This Founders Day on August 25 will be the start of a year-long celebration that is the kickoff to the big Centennial Celebration in 2016! President Woodrow Wilson signed into legislation the creation of the National Park Service 99 years ago on August 25, 1916. Now, 99 years later there are 408 National Parks throughout the United States.

North Carolina has several National Parks and Tuesday would be a great day to visit one and help celebrate Founders Day. Here are just a few of the many National Parks located in the state…

The Land of Oz Does Autumn at Oz in October

The Land of Oz is located near Beech Mountain, North Carolina. It opens every year the first weekend of October for a very special one weekend only festival. The Land of Oz theme park’s annual Autumn At Oz celebration for this year takes place October 3-4, 2015. The festival has many fun activities for both children and adults. Some of the activities are face painting, photo ops with the characters, props and souvenirs, food, and drinks. People travel from all over to come to this one weekend only festival. The festival started out as a small reunion of the theme park’s former employees. Now it is has grown into a popular weekend festival in the mountains of North Carolina. Children and adults as well will all enjoy this special one weekend event that celebrates the Wizard of Oz. As an added bonus the fall foliage show will be under way in the mountains of North Carolina.

Visitors at the Autumn at Oz festival can travel thru the twister that took Dorothy to OZ, walk along the Yellow Brick Road, explore Oz, and meet many of the well-known characters such as the Tin Man, Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow, Professor Marvel, Auntie Em and Uncle Henry, Glinda the Good Witch, the Wizard of Oz and The Wicked Witch of the West with her guards and flying monkeys!

Tickets are $35 for both adults and children. Children 2 years old and under are admitted free of charge. Entrance times to the park for October 3rd and 4th are 10-12, 12-2 or 2-4. You can stay until the event ends at 6:00 PM no matter what time you go in. Advance tickets are recommended due to the popularity of Autumn at Oz. It usually sells-out every year so get your tickets in advance. Buy tickets after August 1 on thee website Land of Oz under Autumn At Oz party.

What Is Land of Oz?

The Land of Oz was an operational theme park for 10 years from 1970-1980. Hard times hit the park and it closed. Then vandalism and destruction took its toll. In 1990 the area was taken over by Emerald Mountain development. With renovations and hard work now it has become what it is today. Emerald Mountain Properties have private parties at Oz, rentals, sales, Land of Oz, Oz souvenirs, Autumn At Oz Festival, bike and hiking trails and 440 acres to discover and explore.

Their website states “Each year we share the park and our memories on a special weekend. We call it our
