Sir Walter Wally Retires From Groundhog Day

Sir Walter Wally has retired from the Raleigh Groundhog Day festivities. The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences announced recently that the groundhog is being retired. Groundhog Day celebrations for 2023 in Raleigh will go on without Sir Walter Wally making an appearance.

The museum will have various displays and activities this Groundhog Day, Thursday, February 2, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free. Fun and educational exhibits include:

How Groundhogs and other animals burrow into the earth to build their homes.  Animals in Winter and how animals survive the cold. Groundhog Hats- make your own groundhog headbands. Groundhog Toss Game – help them get back in their burrow. The history of Groundhog Day, learn about the history of Groundhog Day and get to meet one of the original animals that was used to predict an early/late spring. Rodents of the World – learn about some of the variety of rodents around the world.

Groundhog Day At Chimney Rock

Groundhog Day At Chimney Rock State Park this year also had an announcement. Their resident groundhog, Pumpkin, has been under vet care recently. He will also not be making an appearance.  Chimney Rock we will not be hosting a live in-person or streaming event this year.  We can still go to their webpage (CRSP) Thursday morning to see Pumpkin’s prediction for the arrival of spring and the winner of this year’s Super Bowl.

Where Can NC See Groundhog Day Predictions?

Garner is still having their annual Groundhog Day celebration. Snerd the Groundhog will continue her annual duties this Thursday. Garner’s annual Groundhog Day celebration will be held at White Deer Park from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The event will include live animals, educational booths, Smokey Bear, story time and crafts. Snerd will deliver her prediction to Mayor Marshburn on the stage at noon.
