We love our pets, but traveling with them needs some planning ahead. Here are some valuable pet travel tips to make traveling with your pets easier. North Carolina is a pet-friendly place.

Pet Travel Tips

Plan Ahead: Before leaving on your trip, research pet-friendly accommodations, airlines, and transportation options. Ensure that your chosen destinations are pet-friendly and have the necessary facilities to accommodate your furry companion. Now there are many hotels/motels/rentals that are pet-friendly. Some restaurants with outdoor seating allow pets to be with you at the table.

Visit the Vet: Schedule a visit to your veterinarian to ensure your pet is healthy and up-to-date on vaccinations. Have copies of your pet’s updated vaccinations and other health records. Current rabies vaccine records are especially important. Have records of any necessary medications for the trip. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Pack Essentials: Don’t forget to pack your pet’s essentials. Pack their food, water, bowls, leash, collar with identification tags, waste bags, and any required medications that your pet will take. Familiar items like their favorite toys or blankets can also help them feel more at ease during the journey.

Comfort and Safety: Ensure your pet’s comfort and safety during travel. Use a secure and well-ventilated carrier or harness for smaller pets, and consider using a seat belt or car seat for larger animals. Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. Even when the weather is nice, temperatures can rise quickly in a closed vehicle leading to your pet having a heat stroke. In some states, it’s even illegal to leave a pet in a car unattended.

Frequent Breaks: Like humans, pets need regular breaks during long journeys. Plan for frequent stops to allow them to stretch their legs, relieve themselves, and have a drink of water. This will help keep them calm and comfortable throughout the trip.

Traveling With Pets

Research Pet-Friendly Attractions: Look for pet-friendly attractions and activities at your destination. Many parks, beaches, and hiking trails welcome pets, allowing them to enjoy the adventure alongside you. Remember to follow local rules and regulations regarding pets in public spaces. Many locations in North Carolina have leash laws, including how long the leash must be when in public locations.

Patience and Understanding: Traveling can be stressful for pets, so be patient and understanding. Give them time to adjust to their new surroundings. Provide reassurance and comfort when needed. A little extra love and attention can go a long way in making their travel experience a positive one.

Remember, traveling with pets requires careful planning and consideration.

The importance of fall foliage and elevations. When you read a fall foliage report, the experts and meteorologists always mention mountain elevations. Why is mountain elevation so important? And where are the highest, mid, and lowest elevations in the NC mountains? This post will explain the reason elevation is so important. And list the different popular mountains in each elevation range.

NC Fall Foliage

Fall foliage colors always begin in the highest elevations, those over 5,000 feet. How and why the leaves change color is pretty complicated. But when the change does start taking place, elevation is significant. Higher elevations have cooler air temperatures. The cooler temperatures result in trees preparing to enter their winter dormant period. To add to that, the highest trees change color first, and the highest leaves in a tree change first. At the start of autumn, the air temperatures cool, and a tree’s growth cycle slows down. Since the leaves at the very top of the tree are furthest from the roots, nutrients stop reaching them first. Fewer nutrients mean less chlorophyll. Without chlorophyll, the leaves lose the green. No chlorophyll results in the color change. The type of tree depends on the color of the leaves. Different tree species have different colors their leaves change into during the fall foliage season.

Where To Go

Looking at the locations of the mountains you can understand why the Blue Ridge Parkway is so popular during the fall foliage season. The parkway runs right through some of the highest mountain ranges in North Carolina. Other areas to visit would be Boone, Blowing Rock, and Banner Elk. More south the areas of Cashiers, Highlands, and Franklin have some great views of the Nantahala National Forest. Bryson City and Cherokee are close to the Great Smoky Mountains. Views of the Great Smokies during the fall foliage season are very nice. And Asheville is a popular destination during October.

Typical Timing To View Peak Fall Foliage in NC Mountains

Late September – Spotty color begins at elevations over 6,000 feet in the highest mountains.
First week of October – Color appears at or above 5,000 feet elevation, including Mount Mitchell and Grandfather Mountain.
Second week of October – color appears at the 4,000-5,000 feet elevations.
Third week of October – color spreads to the 3,000-4,000 feet elevations.
Fourth week of October – color makes it to the 2,000-3,000 feet elevations.
Early November- color spreads into the 1,000-2,000 feet elevations.

Snowtubing Fun For All At Hawksnest

Snowtubing at Hawksnest at Seven Devils, North Carolina is so much fun. Hawksnest Tubing is one of the largest snow tubing parks in the United States. It is the largest snowtubing park on the East Coast. It has over 30 lanes of snow tubing that are from 400 to 1000 feet long! To easily get back to the top of the hill there are moving carpet lifts. It is located just minutes from Boone and Banner Elk in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

Hawksnest Snowtubing
Seven Devils, NC
Blue Ridge Mountains

New Wildlife Crossing Construction Begins On I-40 In NC Mountains

A new wildlife crossing is under construction on I-40 in Western North Carolina. The construction project is being built on I-40 at the Harmon Den exit. The North Carolina Department of Transportation will replace the existing bridge. Under the new bridge will be a wildlife passage. The new bridge/wildlife passage construction will be located on Interstate 40 over Harmon Den Road, at Exit 7 in Haywood County, NC. The new project begins the second week of November.

New Wildlife Crossing On I-40

The project will take until May of 2022 to complete. There will be a detour around the bridge for the next 6 months. Drivers on I-40 will detour onto the exit and on-ramps. Work to improve the on-ramp and off-ramp, to be used by traffic while the new bridge and wildlife crossing, has already begun. By mid-November, all traffic will be funneled into a one-lane pattern prior to the bridge. Then traffic will use the ramps as a detour around the bridge. Traffic on I-40 will remain in this pattern until May 2022 while crews remove and replace the deteriorating bridge structure.

Wildlife and Vehicle Collisions

The Harmon Den area has been a trouble spot for wildlife-vehicle collisions. When the NCDOT announced plans to replace the existing bridge structure, Safe Passage and its partners collaborated with the NCDOT for a solution to fit this particular area. Safe Passage: The I-40 Pigeon River Gorge Wildlife Crossing Project has for a while advocated for building a wildlife crossing at this location. When the NCDOT announced plans to replace the existing bridge structure, Safe Passage and its partners eagerly collaborated with the NCDOT so wildlife could safely migrate without having to cross the busy interstate.

There has been a huge increase in traffic volume on Interstate 40 in the Pigeon River Gorge in Western North Carolina and East Tennessee in the last few years. Wildlife mortality caused by vehicle collisions is rapidly rising. Safe Passage and its partners collaborated with the NCDOT for a safe solution to the problem. Wildlife such as black bears, elk, whitetail deer, and other animals live in the area. The animals migrate and in doing so cross the interstate. Crossing the interstate is dangerous to the wildlife as well as to vehicular traffic.

The plans for the new Harmon Den bridge will include two paths. One path on each side of Cold Springs Creek to help wildlife migrate from one side of the interstate to the other without encountering vehicles. A 9-foot tall fence will guide animals to the trails and under the bridge. The NCDOT is also evaluating the use of wildlife guards that should prevent deer and elk from walking up the ramps and onto the interstate. The wildlife guards will hopefully encourage wildlife to cross under the bridge and reduce the possibility of wildlife-vehicle collisions.

Safe Passage: The I-40 Pigeon River Gorge Wildlife Crossing Project

On their website the Safe Passage mission states…

Safe Passage is a large group of people and organizations working toward a common vision. We believe it’s possible to balance the needs of native wildlife with the ever-growing human population in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. We are local, state, tribal, and federal agencies, land managers, conservation organizations, nonprofit park partners, and other invested community members, all working in the region of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The I-40 Pigeon River Gorge Wildlife Crossing Project

Ensuring our public lands are interconnected is critical to protecting the variety of unique wildlife that live in the Southern Appalachian mountains, which include Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Increasing highway permeability in the Pigeon River Gorge will be a giant step toward improving animal population health. But this will represent only the first project in a series of much-needed regional mitigation efforts. The I-40 corridor could serve as a model for other interstate highways that also disrupt the Southern and Central Appalachian corridors.

“The Shadow of the Bear” NC Mountains Annual Fall Visitor

The Shadow of the Bear NC mountains’ annual fall visitor will make an appearance soon. Every fall foliage season Whiteside Mountain in Jackson County gets an unusual visitor. At sunset, this visitor slowly creeps across the valley of the mountain growing larger with every minute. The unusual visitor is a bear, or “The Shadow of the Bear”. When conditions are just right in late October as the sun sets behind Whiteside Mountain the “shadow of the bear” is visible for about 30 minutes between 5:30-6:15 PM. It must be sunny and it only lasts for about 30 minutes. Conditions must be just right. Rain clouds, fog, haze, or cloudy conditions can prevent the shadow from being visible.

When And Where

It takes place only for about 3 weeks, from mid-October (10/15) through early November (11/10). Its trek across the mountain valley is a treat to see during the fall foliage months. But “the shadow of the bear” also repeats its journey in winter from mid-February through early March.

To see the Shadow of the Bear you must be very lucky or very dedicated. Weather conditions must be just right. And it may take multiple trips to the overlook on different days before the conditions are right and the shadow can be seen shadow crossing the valley. And taking a photo is even more difficult!

Whiteside Mountain

Whiteside Mountain has an elevation of 4,930 feet. Its sheer rock cliffs are among the highest in the eastern United States. Whitetop Mountain is located in Jackson County, NC. The shadow of the mountain at sunset cast upon the lower valley looks very much like a bear walking across the treetops. To view this unusual site go to Rhodes Big View Overlook on US Highway 64. The overlook is a few miles west of Cashiers and five miles east of Highlands. But the overlook is not marked! See directions below to find Rhodes Big View Overlook.

Directions

From Cashiers – Beginning at the traffic light at the intersection of Highway 64 and NC 107 in Cashiers, travel west on Highway 64 (toward Highlands) for about 4.3 miles. The Rhodes Big View Overlook, which is not marked, is on the left. If you reach the sign for the entrance to the Whiteside Mountain Trail, you have gone too far and missed the overlook.

From Highlands – Head east on Highway 64 and travel a little over 5 miles. The overlook is just past the sign to Whiteside Mountain Trail and just over the Jackson County line. The overlook will be on the right. Park in the pull-off area across the road from the overlook. Be careful, the area can be crowded, and beware of oncoming traffic.

From Asheville – Take I-26 to exit 40/Highway 280/Airport exit to Brevard. Then follow U.S. 64 to Cashiers. About 70 miles and about 2.5 hours driving time.

Shadow of the Bear Location and Map of Highlands and Cahiers Area

The Cullasaja Gorge

While in the area of Highlands, NC a ride on the Cullasaja Gorge is a must. It is located along US 64 between Franklin and Highlands, NC. The gorge is a 7.5-mile ride along the Cullasaja River. This road is narrow, steep, and full of twists and turns. Drive slow and be very cautious of oncoming traffic.

The views of the mountains, the forest, and the river are just spectacular. There are several waterfalls located along the way. The waterfall Bridal Veil Falls, just 1.2 miles west of Highlands. Dry Falls has a 75-foot waterfall with a nice view of the river. From Dry Falls parking area, a short trail leads you behind the waterfall ( so you stay dry). Also, a walkway provides a great view of the waterfall from the parking area. Other falls along the Cullasaja Gorge are Quarry Falls and Cullasaja Falls. In autumn a ride on the Cullasaja George is so beautiful when the leaves are golden yellow, orange, and red.
